Public Engagement and Information (PE&I) is critical to creating successful Transit Oriented Developments (TODs). Communities who engage in PE&I campaigns early in the transit planning process, and continue those activities through the TOD planning process, can create more successful, sustainable and inclusive communities.
Public outreach campaigns are critical to informing both existing and future residents about new development patterns and concepts. Early and frequent communication with the public can result in greater public understanding of TOD, often leading to better, and in the end less expensive, project outcomes.
Public involvement in the early stages of the TOD process can result in station areas that reflect the vision of the existing community. Taking the time to carefully incorporate transit stations into the existing community fabric, through the help of public involvement, will result in a stronger, more supportive community and, ultimately, a more successful TOD.
